The New Jersey singer\u2011songwriter Carmen Sclafani has been releasing sharp, socially tuned records since his 2006 debut There And Back Again, followed by All For One (2008), Beggars And Thieves (2010), XII (2012), Within (2017), the World\u2019s Collide EP, and All Fired Up in 2024. He\u2019s the kind of artist who drops in every couple of years to take the temperature of the world \u2014 and report back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>His latest, There\u2019s A Change A Comin\u2019, opens with a stinging rebuke in \u201cBarabbas,\u201d where flinty acoustic guitar frames lyrics aimed squarely at the moral rot of the moment. It\u2019s a song that asks who we\u2019re willing to excuse \u2014 and what that says about us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The record moves fluidly between political and personal terrain. The bruised bottleneck blues of \u201cCold Hard World\u201d sits alongside the contemplative \u201c1963,\u201d a tribute to the architects of change \u2014 Guthrie, Seeger, Dylan, Dr. King, and Kennedy. His mordant humor surfaces in the ramshackle \u201cBillionaire\u2019s Blues,\u201d while tenderness threads through \u201cIf You Never See Me Again\u201d and \u201cDivided,\u201d even as the lyrics stay tough\u2011minded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Topical cuts land hard. \u201cEven\u201d takes aim at media manipulation with roughneck grace, and \u201cThe People\u2019s House\u201d delivers a pointed critique of the January 6th insurrectionists. The album closes with the poignant farewell of \u201cI Will Walk You Home,\u201d a reminder that even in fractured times, compassion still has a place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As the Bard of Hibbing once said, you don\u2019t need a weatherman to know which way the wind blows.
